KITCHENER, ON: The Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) and ALLIANCE Hockey, in partnership with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), are hosting the 2015 OHL Gold Cup, May 7-10 in Kitchener, Ontario.
The OHL Gold Cup is an annual event created to feature Ontario’s top Under-16 talent. As part of the revamped Hockey Canada Program of Excellence, the top players from the OHL Gold Cup will be invited to attend the Hockey Canada Under-17 National Camp where they will practice and compete against other players throughout Canada to earn a spot on Team Canada and compete at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
The players, born in 1999, were selected by the teams' (Member Partner’s and Hockey Canada Branches) appointed Director of Operations, with support from Darrell Woodley, Director of Central Scouting. These players are competing in the 20 game tournament where they are being evaluated by Hockey Canada scouts.
Ryan Jankowski, Hockey Canada’s head scout for the men’s Program of Excellence, will lead player selection for both the summer camp and three national teams, with assistance from regional scouts – Carl Bouchard (Quebec, Atlantic Canada), Wade Klippenstein (Western Canada), Darrell Woodley and Barclay Branch (Ontario).
Over 30 players from the OHL Gold Cup were invited to the first Hockey Canada Under-17 National Camp, with 23 players from the event cracking the Team Canada White, Red and Black rosters.
The OHL Gold Cup has hosted elite prospects and 2015 National Hockey League (NHL) draft eligible players such as Team ALLIANCE Hockey Alumnus Travis Konecny and Lawson Crouse (2015 Team Canada World Junior Gold Medalist).
