Mike Farwell Named Honorary Chair of the 2016 Central Region Midget AAA Championship
Waterloo, Ontario (February 10, 2016) – Waterloo Minor Hockey Association (WMHA) today announced that local radio personality Mike Farwell, has been selected as the honorary chairman for the 2016 Central Region Midget AAA Championship.

“Mike Farwell is the ideal person to be named as our honorary chairman”, said WMHA VP Greg Best.  “Mike embodies the values of leadership, community involvement and selflessness, which are qualities we strive to instill in our members. WMHA is proud to be able to work with Mike as our honorary chairman and to help raise awareness and support of research and treatment for cystic fibrosis, the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults today.”

“The Waterloo Wolves take a great deal of pride in being the host association for the Central Region Midget AAA championship,” Farwell said.

“It is a tremendous honor to assume the role of honorary chairman.  Also, given that fundraising for cystic fibrosis is near and dear to my heart, I'm so grateful that WMHA has offered to help support our search for a cure or control for this terminal disease."

Since 1974, the best minor hockey teams in the country have gathered to compete for Canada's National Midget Championship: the TELUS Cup.  The TELUS Cup is Canadian minor hockey’s only national championship.  Alumni include names like Sidney Crosby, Patrick Roy, Daniel Brière, Wendel Clark, and Steve Yzerman.

This year Waterloo hosts the Central Region qualifier.  The tournament will be held at the Waterloo Recreation Complex from March 28, to April 3, 2016.

League champions from the Northern Ontario Hockey Association, Greater Toronto Hockey League, Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario, Hockey Eastern Ontario, Ontario Minor Hockey Association, and the host Waterloo Wolves, will all meet in Waterloo to decide the Central Region champion.

The winner of the Central Region championship in Waterloo will move on to compete with the winners of Atlantic Region, West Region, Pacific Region and Quebec Region championships in the national TELUS Cup Championships held in Quispamsis, New Brunswick in April.

Proceeds from the tournament are being directed to WMHA’s WolfPack Hockey player development program and Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
